“…the Brassouls are unique in this country and the better for it… they conform to no fixed notion of what a brass band should be (other than maybe have a good time and ensure you do too).”
Graham Reid, NZ Herald, Aug 29 2002
“Not Your Ordinary Municipal Brass Band sounds like a street party, but Aotearoa rather than Louisiana style. Brassouls do what all the best kiwi bands have done, they take an imported template, and then bend it and twist it to reflect their own musical perspective. …full of funk and lots of fun”Nick Bollinger, National Radio, Aug 03 2002

Reviews Of Not What's Not But What Is
“The debut release from Auckland trumpeter Kingsley Melhuish's group is an accomplished and singular triumph… The horn-based aggregation delivers a varied gumbo of Melhuish originals inspired (but not held captive) by the loose-limbed jazz of masters like Don Cherry.”
Gary Steel, Metro magazine, August 2003.
“…a joyous, slightly anarchic and amusingly heretical approach taken throughout”
Graham Reid , New Zealand Herald, May 29, 2003.

PECD 1009 Te Moananui a Kiwa
A live solo performance by multi instrumentalist Kingsley Melhuish in response to the Auckland Art Gallery exhibition of the same name.
The Pacific Ocean is vast, occupying nearly one third of the Earth's surface. It was named in 1520 by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan for its placid waters. To its Polynesian inhabitants it is Te Moananui a Kiwa – the Great Ocean of Kiwa – each of the cultures tell stories of an ancestor named Kiwa, who was famed as a great ocean explorer. The exhibition Te Moananui a Kiwa links stories about exploring, journeying, collecting, people and the land. The interplay between historic and contemporary art highlights how the passing of time and politics influences the way we see these works today
