The journey so far...  

It's been a decade since composer Andrew McMillan first hit on the idea of fusing Pacific drum beats with jazz. McMillan has for the duration of the project, worked closely with Aitutaki master drummer Taiau Nicholas.
Together they have directed the group drawing on their own backgrounds to develop a musical dialogue unique to this ensemble.
The resulting fusion of traditional Cook Island music and jazz has been described as the birth of a new musical genre:   “...from the first eerie rattle of sticks on the takirua (a wooden log drum), joined by the deeper soulful beats of the Kaara (log drum) and pau (skin drum), it was clear this was going to be something special.
When the traditional Cook Island drummers were joined by jazz sax, guitar, bass and drums, the effect was bone shattering, quite intoxicating.” (James Hollings. Evening Post.)
