Labrophonic Preservation Society Formerly the Conch Ensemble, the Labrophonic Preservation Society finds its roots in the ubiquitous conch shell.
One man's lamp, another's calling card, this ensemble takes the mesmerising sounds of the conch to dizzying heights. Using the most ancient of trumpets, the Labrophonic Preservation Society breathe musical life into this ceremonial instrument. With conches played en mass, a unique music of Aotearoa is borne.
These beautiful relics of the sea are not only played in tonal context, but are used to great effect exploring the tempers of the soul.
“The Conch Ensemble turned a lack of accuracy into a virtue, and the resultant slightly off kilter chordal shapes into a celebration of the brash exuberance of jazz.”
