Brassouls

Brassouls is no platoon of military uniforms. Their corruption begins with doses of New Orleans rhythm & blues and the rich evocative timbre of pacific conch shells, spurred on by a rhythmic inertia unparalleled in Aotearoa.
These brass renegades are the nation's premiere R & B (Rhythm and Brass) band. Such a juggernaut of infectious energetic music can be found nowhere else on the planet but right here in Auckland , New Zealand .
Only in New Zealand could a jazz musician revive the era of big bands, give it a twist of the number 8 wire to create Kingsley Melhuish's ingenious Brassouls.

“While travelling I was greatly inspired by innovative band leaders such as Lester Bowie, Steve Turre, Oliver Lake and the down home R & B of the New Orleans brass bands.
Coming home I wanted to form a band that incorporated all these sounds with local flavours too. Something that would put ‘soul' into brass, the result was Brassouls. Kingsley Melhuish.

•  Brassouls' music has inspired a collective choregraphed work by the innovative Black Grace dance company (New Works 2005).

•  They featured at the New Zealand Arts Festival 2004 culminating in a performance at the Govemor General's House.

•  2003 was a year of festivals as Brassouls spread their contageous energy across the North Island , headlining at the National jazz festival in Tauranga, a cameo at AK03 with Don McGlashan and ending with the Wellington International Jazz festival.

•  Renowned for taking their music to the grass roots Brassouls found presidential favour with a superb performance before former US president Bill Clinton.

Reviews:

Not Your Ordinary Municipal Brass Band
“…the Brassouls are unique in this country and the better for it… they conform to no fixed notion of what a brass band should be (other than maybe have a good time and ensure you do too).”
Graham Reid, NZ Herald, Aug 29 2002

“Not Your Ordinary Municipal Brass Band sounds like a street party, but Aotearoa rather than Louisiana style.
Brassouls do what all the best kiwi bands have done, they take an imported template, and then bend it and twist it to reflect their own musical perspective. …full of funk and lots of fun”

Nick Bollinger, National Radio, Aug 03 2002
“Ordinary would be an understatement to the what the debut offering from Kiwi big brass band, the Brassouls, has actually achieved here… An organic collection of soul-infused brass arrangements injected with fun; Brassouls provide traditionalism with an appealing twist.”
